Mammography is a specialized medical imaging technique used to examine the breast tissue for any signs of abnormalities or potential breast cancer. It uses low-dose X-rays to create detailed images (mammograms) of the breast, allowing healthcare providers to detect tumors, cysts, or other issues that may not be palpable during a physical exam. Mammography is commonly used as a screening tool for women, especially those over 40, to detect early signs of breast cancer.
While mammography is an essential tool in breast cancer detection, it’s not perfect. In some cases, it may miss cancer (false negative), or it may suggest abnormalities that turn out to be benign (false positive). However, it remains one of the most effective screening methods for breast cancer available.
Early Detection of Breast Cancer: Mammography is primarily used to detect early-stage breast cancer, even before a lump is noticeable or palpable. Finding cancer early increases the chances of successful treatment.
Identifies Non-Cancerous Conditions: Mammograms can also help identify non-cancerous conditions like cysts or benign tumors, which may require further monitoring but are not malignant.
Detects Calcifications: Small deposits of calcium in the breast tissue, called calcifications, can sometimes show up on mammograms. While most calcifications are benign, certain patterns may indicate early signs of cancer, and further tests can help clarify.
Aids in Pre-Surgical Planning: If breast cancer is diagnosed, mammography may be used to help map the size and location of the tumor, assisting surgeons in planning for biopsy or treatment options.
